GabbyJo Learning - Software Tools and Toys for Early Education for Babies, Infants and Children

GabbyJo Learning™ was created by Jay Sener, who was inspired by his daughter Gabby Jo's delight in the movement and colors she was seeing on his computer at a very early age. In his own words, Mr. Sener recalls the inception of the idea behind GabbyJo Count to Ten™ and the birth of a company.

"While sitting at the my desk one day with my three-month old daughter in my lap, I noticed that she was entranced by the screen saver on my computer. The primary colored ball bouncing from corner to corner, side to side had her riveted; she cooed and playfully jumped about. At the time I didn't think much about it.

Over the next couple of days I noticed this same behavior when she would see the screen saver come alive while I was working with her in my lap or feeding her a bottle. I even mused that it would be great if she would be this interested in some of the books I was reading her. Again, I thought little about it.

For a couple of weeks prior to noticing her excitement with the computer, I had been looking for some flash cards that I thought an infant might find interesting, but I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Everything seemed too complex, lacked color, or worse, both. I had even considered making my own, and had even begun outlining what I wanted them to look like.

Then one day while enjoying her amusement with the screen saver on the computer, it occurred to me that if she could stay focused on the screen saver, I should make my own computer flashcards using the same characteristics of the screen saver that she loved so much. If she was that interested in the screen saver, I could create something based on the same principles of color, animation, and simplicity that she might find interesting. And so was born GabbyJo Count to Ten™.

GJCentralParkAs I created the computer flashcards, I made sure that the only time I worked on it was when I had my daughter in my lap. I figured that if she lost interest in what was going on in front of her; I was on the wrong track. What amazed me was that she never lost interest as long as I worked on one screen at a time. When it was completed and I played it for the first time, she was riveted. She cooed, bounced around, and showed great delight as I read along to her from the slides.

As she got older, she began laughing at it and showed even more interest. All the while, I made sure not to run through it too many times in one sitting. Limiting it to two run-through's in a day, and only using it every other day, really seemed to keep her interested in the program. Now, when we sit down at the computer, she gets excited.

Her excitement for this has inspired me to create more computer flashcards; as as they are completed and meet with her approval, I'll surely post the new programs and let you know about them as well!
